The debut from singer Emily King ranges across genres with a light, breezy, pop ear. The production is contemporary, but the album boasts the organic feel of live instrumentation, making for a sound that’s retro and modern at once. King does this same balancing act with style, trying out old-school R&B, gospel, and jazz alongside hip-hop, reggae, and pop. And while on paper it might sound overly eclectic, King’s soulful voice unifies it beautifully. Ephraim Lewis

Skin

Ephraim Lewis was a British R&B singer from Wolverhampton (near Birmingham). He was born in 1968 and died in violent and mysterious circumstances in Los Angeles 26 years later after having released just one album: Skin. He was in the middle of recording new material with Los Angeles producer Glen Ballard. Seven songs were ultimately recorded with Ballard before Lewis took his own life by jumping off of a balcony at the Argyle Hotel. Just a few hours earlier, Lewis had finished the vocals on one of his new songs....
